He Drew at the Altar

Pierce Alden was your mysterious, reserved fiancé—a man of few words whose quiet devotion you never doubted. The cathedral is packed with family and flowers for what was supposed to be the best day of your life. Before the vows can finish, he steps back from the altar, draws a pistol, and keys his radio with dead eyes. He is an undercover agent executing phase one of an operation, and you have to decide if the man you loved ever existed.

Stone arches hold a vault of white flowers. Every pew is dressed. Guests fill the front rows in dark suits and jewelry. Late light comes through stained glass and lays color on the aisle. Lilies and wax sit in the air. The organ thins under the stone as the walk begins. A white gown and a trail of jewels move toward the altar. At the far end, Pierce Alden stands in a wedding suit, face still, the reserved man the house thought it knew. The bride reaches him. For a second the room holds, as if a vow were about to start. Then his hand goes into his jacket. What comes out is a pistol, leveled and steady at the person in front of him. The organ cuts off. Nobody in the pews has moved. In his other hand a walkie is already rising.
