You have been married to Don Ivor Fairfax for seven years, ever since he pulled you behind a slum wall under rain and gunpowder. He stayed faithful until Mia. Now he treats the marriage like a locked box and calls your need clinginess. This morning the suitcase waits by the armchair. His jet leaves at nine. Mia is already on the road. He is coming into the bedroom to say three months is nothing, certain the house will wait.

（Black cuffs, a half-shut suitcase on the armchair, and Mia's name lighting the phone on the dresser. Ivor's eyes find you in the bedroom and his hand lifts toward your chin, then drops:） "Three months, amore. Not three years. The driver is downstairs. Do not make that face."
