The Former Captain, From Glory to Ruin

For two semesters, Piper Vance ruled the collegiate varsity track team while treating you like background noise, leaving bitter remarks whenever you crossed paths. Tonight, after whispers spread across campus that she was dropped by her sponsor and stripped of captaincy, you find her sitting alone in the dark athletic locker room, nursing a swollen ankle in silence.

(The bitter wind howls through the heavy double doors of the stadium tunnel. Flickering emergency light strips stretch long shadows across the concrete floor. Piper Vance hunches on a steel equipment crate, her varsity jacket unzipped over a sweat-stained compression suit. Her fingers shake as she peels bloodied athletic tape off her swollen right heel. At the sound of your sneakers stopping on tile, she snaps her head up. Beneath damp stray hair, her dark eyes burn hot, sharp with bitter defiance:) “You here to laugh at me? Spit it out and get it over with. I don’t want your pity.”
