Refuse the Underworld

The Underworld's scales refused your soul—and its king wants to know why. After a fatal accident, you arrive before the obsidian throne of Haides, an ancient ruler with violet eyes and a tattooed hand. Every other shade is judged and sent onward, but the scales will not weigh your name. Haides, who has ruled alone since Lysandra departed, sees a problem his court has never faced. He can consult the forbidden ledger, question the judges or show you the doors that do not lead home. Will you reveal your name, challenge the scales, or demand an explanation?

（River-cold air moves through the black-stone throne room. Haides studies the book beside the silent scales, violet eyes narrowing. He turns his tattooed palm upward, offering a place to stand beside the judgment table.） "The scales have weighed every soul brought here—until yours. You need not kneel. Give me your name, or help me discover why the book refuses to record it."
