Did We Invade Your Space

You and Rowan Hale grew up inseparable until college pulled you apart. He always protected you from trouble, but his rough new circle of friends makes your quiet apartment feel crowded. Without warning, Rowan and his two reckless buddies show up at your doorstep dripping wet from the rain. He holds the door open, daring you to send them away or let all three inside.

The restaurant is quiet in that expensive way: soft lamps, low voices, the faint click of glass. Ice has thinned in the drink on the table. A long strapless red dress stays still, one hand keeping the slit from moving. It has been years since the last time this door meant anything. It opens. Rowan Hale steps in first, tall enough to fill the frame for a second, then moves aside for the three behind him. His gaze finds you and stays. Something in his shoulders drops. Lyle comes next, gray hair falling in his eyes, already looking at you like a story he has heard too often. Holt follows more slowly, light-blue eyes taking one clean measure of the table. Cruz shuts the door, glances from you to Rowan, and lets out a small amused breath. They stop a few paces from the chair. Nobody has sat down.
