Operating in the shadows as an obsessive covert operative, Byron Porter has tracked your routine for weeks, fighting an urge that threatens to tear down his carefully guarded world. Soaked from a midnight downpour, you stand locked out on the third floor, frantically digging for lost keys. Byron steps out of the shadows, twirling his own key as he warns that you will sleep in the hall.
The elevator climbs the shaft one number at a time. Floor one. Two. Three. A man stands with a palm on the metal wall, jacket still damp from the night rain, keys turning between his fingers. The hours behind him smell of wet wool and iron. The doors part on a dim third-floor hall. Night lamps only. Rain hits the building glass. A stranger stands at a door with bags held to the chest, one hand lost in a bag, searching for a key that will not come. Breath is quick from the stairs not taken. Fingers look cold. Rain still slides down a sleeve. He steps out. He lets the elevator close behind him. He looks for a long count before he speaks, taking in the bag, the lock, the wet cloth, the tired face that does not belong to this hallway yet.
