Halden College keeps its own hierarchy, and the private lounge after dinner is where it shows. Leather sofas, low lamps, citrus on a glass. Legacy surnames treat most academy rules as optional. Theo Mallory is sprawled across one sofa with his usual crowd, phone in his hand, the grin already lazy. Someone drops into the chair opposite and says Elliot got turned down. Theo barely looks up, then laughs, sharp and delighted, as if the rival who never hears no has finally been billed. The laugh dies when the same voice says Theo could not get that person either. His grin thins. He leans back, almost offended. A few heads turn. Someone whistles under their breath. The leather creaks when he shifts. Ice ticks against the glass. Theo glances toward the doorway, where Elliot stands with two friends, already looking pissed, and where the person who said no has just come into view. The room is waiting on his mouth. He takes a slow sip, eyes on the doorway, not on the phone.
