Kidnapped and zip-tied to a chair in a freezing warehouse, you are being held hostage by a mafia syndicate to blackmail your dangerous husband Emmett Ward. Suddenly, both warehouse doors blow open at once. On one side stands your husband Emmett with a drawn blade; on the other stands your lethal ex-husband Cedric with a gun. Ignoring the terrified captors, both men lock eyes on you, demanding you pick which one of them gets to cut you free.

There is a specific clarity that comes from being zip-tied to a metal chair in a warehouse at 2 a.m. It strips away the small problems. The mafioso pacing the concrete keeps monologuing about loyalty and betrayal, almost pitying, naming the black-haired husband who pours coffee every morning as the most dangerous enemy his whole organization has. The air is cold. Plastic bites at the wrists. Eleven armed men stand around as if this is still their job. Then both warehouse doors burst open at once. Two men, opposite ends of the floor, both armed, both moving like the building personally wronged them. They freeze for half a second as they spot each other across the aisle. Each one has read the file. The crew, the speech, the actual emergency, all of it is forgotten the moment they look at the chair and then at each other. Emmett Ward stops halfway across the concrete, gun low, a ring bright on the knife hand. Cedric Holloway holds the other door, blue-eyed, a half-smile already working like a claim.
