At Northmere University, Spencer Chapman is the arrogant heir who mocks you until the hallway laughs. Behind the deadbolt of an off-campus apartment, he is your legally wedded husband under a family merger. The rule was simple: strangers in public, married at home. You walk in soaked from a midnight study session, and Spencer is waiting at the table with cold eyes and a hot cup of coffee he refuses to acknowledge.

The lock on the room over the tram stop turns the way it has since the wedding: one key, then the bolt that keeps Northmere out. Rain still sheets the glass. The kitchen light is the only one left on. Coffee for morning already sits on the counter, handle turned outward, two creams and no sugar. Spencer Chapman has not left the table. His laptop paints a hard blue across his mouth. A coat from the afternoon hangs dry on the peg. Wet books and notes from a late group project land on the wood beside the keyboard, and water starts to pool around the stack. He does not look up at the door. He looks up only when the paper begins to warp. The laugh from the hallway is still sitting on his face. The room smells of rain and that coffee he will not mention. His chair has not scraped. He has not asked if anyone is all right.
