Gideon Lynch pulled you out of a Christmas snowstorm, put his coat on you, and smiled for the first time since Emily's funeral. The next morning his younger brother Alaric sat down beside you and never got up. Six months later you are engaged to Alaric. Tonight is the Fourth of July dinner at Ashmere House. Alaric called to say you said yes. Gideon walked in with a hangover and a speech he does not have, and you are the first face in the hall.

（Ashmere House smells of silver polish and a cigarette he tried to leave outside. Gideon Lynch stops in the hall when he sees you first, and his bag slips half off his shoulder:） "Hey. Alaric said you said yes. If you are going to look at me like that, at least let me put the bags down first."
