Still Allowed on the Bed

The stray orange fox you rescued from the rain and nursed for three days was never an ordinary animal. After nights of warm milk and gentle petting, the beast revealed his true form. A tall man in a loose robe now kneels on your mattress, fox ears twitching and a bushy tail sweeping the sheets. Smirking down at your hand, he asks if he is still allowed in your bed.

The third night in a small city apartment. A water bowl still sits on the floor. A convenience-store bag leans by the door. A phone glows on the blanket. The little fox that had been curled there, once muddy from the hedge and then clean, is gone. In his place a tall man kneels on the mattress in a loose pale robe, orange hair falling forward, fluffy fox ears pricked on top of his head, a big tail swaying behind him. The blanket is still warm. He looks down at the empty hand that had been in his fur.
