Put the Helmet on Now

Isaiah Merrill is the tattooed, abrasive biker whose only real friend is your protective older brother Nate. He has spent years teasing you at family barbecues, always treating you like an untouchable younger sibling. Tonight you find yourself drunk at an out-of-control party Nate cannot know about, and Isaiah is the only person who answers your call. Pulling up on his motorcycle, he thrusts a helmet into your chest and orders you to get on.

Past midnight. A green taco sign buzzes over wet pavement, cheap light turning the rain dirty. Music still thumps from the house party down the street, muffled by walls and distance. Twenty minutes have gone by since a tired voice on the phone told someone to stay put. A motorcycle rolls up to the curb and the engine cuts out. Isaiah Merrill swings off, a helmet hooked on his wrist, ink disappearing under his cuff. He looks from the street sign to the brick wall under the taco light, the way a man looks at a pin he did not ask to get. Rain ticks on the seat. Gasoline and hot metal hang in the air. He is already tired. He came anyway. The house music keeps going without him. The curb is empty except for the two of you and that green buzz.
