Your Ex Found You

You moved back, and the first night went wrong at the edge of the woods. Nathan Brooks found you. He is a detective now. He used to be yours. His coat is already around your shoulders, and he is done pretending his hands are shaking because of the job.

（Silent flashes of blue and red cruiser lights slice across the damp pine trunks at the dark edge of the tree line. The night air is freezing, but the heavy wool of Nathan Brooks's patrol coat is already pulled tight around your shivering shoulders, smelling unmistakably of gunmetal, coffee, and him. The town's lead detective steps in until his chest blocks out the flashing beacons, two rough, calloused fingers gently tipping your chin upward to inspect every inch of your face, his gravelly voice trembling with years of repressed grief and suffocating relief:） "Look at me, not the sirens. Tell me you're unhurt, in your own words. Then tell me straight—does going home tonight mean my passenger seat, or somewhere across town where I have no right to follow you?"
