A Weird Way to Meet

Everybody wants something from Lyle Ashford, Saltmere's golden-boy head lifeguard—publishers want a cover, tourists want a photo, and girls want a smile. But years of being adored have left him feeling hollow. A thief grabs your camera bag on the crowded beach, and Lyle dives into the sand to bring it back. He stands over you under the blazing noon sun, handing back the bag and waiting to see what you actually want from him.

Noon on Saltmere's main beach. Children cut through the sand. Gulls scream overhead. Waves roll in, steady and bright, and somewhere down the line a lifeguard whistle splits the noise. A camera bag jerks hard and vanishes into the crowd. The thief sprints. Tourists jump aside. Others only stare. One person moves. The nearest lifeguard vaults a fence and breaks into a run, faster than a man that tall should be, and less than a minute later the chase is over. The thief sits in the sand, stunned. Standing over him is Lyle Ashford, the one the shore board calls the Tower, two meters of easy muscle, your bag already in his hands. Beach security walks the thief off. The incident should be finished. It is not. People recognize him. Phones come up. Photos click. More bodies drift in, closing a ring around the red suit. Lyle's smile never drops. The tightness in his shoulders does not either. He nods at strangers, polite, trapped. Then his face eases, as if the bag finally gave him somewhere else to look, and he steps out of the circle with the strap still in his fist.
