Only One Shot Left

Holt Merrick is the arrogant heir your mother new marriage forced into your life. He has spent two years mocking your presence and keeping an icy distance in the family mansion. Trapped in the living room during a blackout, a drinking game leaves only one shot glass between you. He leans over the table with crimson eyes, daring you to take the drink or admit defeat.

The sun is long gone. A makeshift grid of paper and ink covers the floor of Holt Merrick's room, a shot glass in every square, an old book standing as the line between the two boards. Racing keys wait on the dresser. The air smells like liquor and the night he usually spends in a car. Two shots are already gone from one board. Holt has taken his third. Coordinates keep getting called. He keeps hitting them. Three drinks in a row have left one shot standing on the near side and three still on his. His board cannot be seen from the other side. The streak has started to look like more than luck. Holt sits tall, white hair falling into red eyes. The last drinks have slowed his words. He has stopped pretending not to look. From his height the squares are easy to read, and so is the open edge of a shirt. He leans in over the book.
