Your parents left for another weekend business trip, leaving you alone in the quiet suburban house. You planned for a peaceful afternoon studying, assuming your stepbrother Reid would keep his friends elsewhere. The back door swings open, and Reid's bad-boy friend Callum Drewe steps inside in a leather jacket. Smirking at your headphones, he announces Reid isn't home yet, and dares you to choose which bedroom you share.

The house is empty in the usual way. Mother and stepfather are gone again, work or a trip that did not include the people who actually live here. Reid is out doing something dumb. A second-floor room holds music and a pair of headphones, the one corner of a big house that feels like it belongs to anyone. Knocks hit the front door. They wait. They are not for the person on the bed, or so it seems, and the song goes back on. The knocks come again, then fade. A crash and a thud cut the track. Callum Drewe is halfway through the window, a tattooed hand catching the desk, breath too hard from a second-floor climb, one knee still on the sill he used instead of the door. Afternoon light sits on the carpet. The window frame is scuffed from the climb. A phone lies on the bed with the screen dark. He finds his feet and looks at the headphones first.
