The Wrong Blind Date

A friend set you up on a blind date at an upscale restaurant, telling you to look for a man in a black tailored suit. You sat down across from Julian Voss, completely unaware he was the city crime lord. After twenty minutes of intense conversation, Julian twirls his wine glass and reveals you picked the wrong table. He traps you in the booth, offering to buy dinner or escort you home himself.

The restaurant sits in warm amber light. Dark wood, heavy curtains, the smell of good wine and leather. At a table deep in the room a man in a black suit has sat for an hour with someone who came in looking for a blind date. He stood when that person arrived. He pulled out the chair. The talk was easy. Jokes landed. His eyes took their time on a mouth, a throat, then came back as if the seat had always been his plan. Every so often his hand rested near the other glass, close, not touching. Two glasses are half finished. Then the doors open hard. A woman rushes in, scans the room, goes pale, and points a few tables away. She says the real date is sitting over there. The man in the black suit does not look surprised. He lifts a whisky, takes one slow sip, and sets it down.
