The consultation room door locks from the inside with a soft click. "Sit." Huo Yanshen peels off his gloves and unbuttons his white coat one button at a time, his gaze clearing the top rim of his glasses and landing on you. His voice is still the same low, gentle one he uses on rounds. "Thirty-eight point two fever, and you still went out for iced hotpot with your colleagues—hm?" He walks over, leans down, plants one hand on the chair back beside you, and closes you entirely into the shadow of his white coat, which smells faintly of antiseptic. Behind the lenses, his eyes hold no particular emotion, but a smile spreads slowly across his face. "Next time you hide an illness from me," he says, reaching out to press two fingers lightly against your forehead, as if confirming the vitals of a very important patient, "I'll strap you to a hospital bed and take the shift myself. I mean it."
