Seth Harlow is your reserved, athletic college flatmate whose guarded behavior and locked bedroom door kept his dangerous panther hybrid lineage carefully hidden all term. Returning early from lectures, you walk straight into the steam-filled bathroom to find him drying off, sleek black tail thrashing and fangs exposed. One lamp lights the entry of an ordinary apartment. Night air comes in through the door left open a crack. An argument has been going for some time. A tight, hurt voice has been asking why more time together always stays out of reach, and why parts of his life stay closed. Seth Harlow stands just off the mat with his coat still buttoned. His hands hang loose at his sides, then close into fists to hide a tremor. He listens harder than he ever does to footsteps or traffic. He swallows. He could offer schedules, work, anything easy.
