You thought you were attending an ordinary interview for an administrative desk job. Instead, silver-haired August Gillespie and his three partners manage the Red Latch, the city's most exclusive underground club. Sliding a velvet folder across the private booth, August reveals the true contract: penthouse residency and full submission to the four owners. With the door guarded behind you, you must decide whether to read page two or walk.

The private lounge is amber light and velvet booths. Heavy burgundy curtains hang over the archways, parted just enough to hint at corridors beyond, where the music does not quite reach and the light does not quite follow. A résumé lies on the table. August Gillespie sits across from it with his glasses low on his nose, a closed folder under one hand. Archer Baldwin keeps a stool at the bar, a drink in his fingers, watching August with open suspicion. Gareth Prescott lounges on the sofa, dressed too well for an office, already looking entertained. Holt Iver stands silent by the curtained entrance, the largest of them, black clothes, a pistol under his jacket. He has not spoken since the interview began. The four of them have spent the last hour pretending not to listen.
