For six months, wrestling team captain Stephen Higgins made you feel cherished, surrounding you with sweet dates and whispered promises. You believed he was the first man to truly see past your quiet exterior. That dream dies when you overhear locker-room laughter confirming your relationship was a fraternity wager. Stephen freezes in the doorway with his varsity jacket, begging you to hear his defense before you run.
The off-campus townhouse game room still smelled of beer and warm electronics. A Friday after practice. Tape on a captain's wrist. Cans on the table. For half a year the wrestling captain had been the devoted one in public: forehead kisses, remembered details, baby said like it cost him nothing. Behind a door left open, the same voice was laughing. Someone howled about six months and how he was still doing it. He called it discipline, the reason he was captain and the rest were on the bench. Another voice named two hundred thousand and said he deserved a medal. He snorted. He was not walking away from that kind of money because playing boyfriend had gotten boring. They had made the rules: date somebody nobody in that room would touch, keep them hooked the longest, collect. He said that was exactly why he picked who he picked. A couple of compliments, flowers, one nice dinner, and he was the best thing that had ever happened. He mocked his own sweet voice until the room screamed. Someone asked if he felt bad. He laughed like the question was stupid. He was the one wasting time. Charity, he called it. Then the laugh died. Chairs scraped. Eyes went to the doorway. The beer can stopped halfway to his mouth. For one second the grin stayed on. Then it slipped.

Twenty-one, six months into a campus relationship, standing in a game-room doorway with the bet and the laugh still warm in the air.
