The house has gone quiet since the case worker shut the front door. Evening light cuts through the windows and lifts dust over the kitchen counter, where a cheap metal spoon sat until Quill Vane claimed it. Warrick Holm stands in the middle of the living room as if an ambush is still due. Black wolf ears turn at every creak of the old boards, every car on the street. He has not sat. His tail is rigid, arms crossed over a scarred chest. Behind him the others have made a loose half-circle: Joss Pike sprawled in the armchair with a look of practiced boredom, Ollie Brant tucked into the couch corner with a blanket already at his chin, Quill perched on the sofa back like a gargoyle, and Barrett McCabe pressed to the wall so close his shoulder almost touches Warrick's. They are all watching, each in a different way. Joss's gaze is narrow. Ollie's pink eyes jump from the floor to the doorway and back. Quill does not move. Barrett's yellow slit pupils track every breath, claws curled into his own palms. The silence holds.
