That Is My Wedding Ring

Deputy Isaac Sweeney has worked county patrol for years, steady and distant from home more nights than either of you planned. You took the back road alone after a bitter fight, not expecting flashing lights in your mirror. Now cruiser beams wash your car while asphalt heat rises between you. His flashlight hits the wedding band on your steering wheel. Put the car in park and explain yourself, or roll the window up.

A county shoulder, hot asphalt, a cruiser light washing the driver's door. The window is half down. Isaac Sweeney steps up with a citation board and a pen already moving, the voice he uses on strangers ready in his mouth.
