He Kept the Wedding Church

You spent seven years building a life with Sullivan Graves, planning every detail of your dream cathedral wedding until he abruptly cast you aside for an heiress. Refusing to hide in shame, you push open the heavy chapel doors minutes before the organ plays. Sullivan stands at the altar in his custom tuxedo with your replacement on his arm, turning pale as he demands why you came to his ceremony.

Late-afternoon heat sits in the old stone of St. Briony's, warming the iron gate and pulling the scent of white garden roses out through the open church doors. The chalkboard stands just beyond the sidewalk, ivory script on dark slate, framed in greenery and the antique-gold border chosen months ago. SULLIVAN GRAVES and WILLA DANE. Not the name that belonged there. Inside, the wedding is already set the way it was always meant to be: ivory candles, white roses, pale-blue ribbon, handwritten place cards stacked near the vestibule, the organ testing a line through the rafters. Almost every detail was decided before the engagement ended. The wedding was not canceled. The bride was changed. Through the open doors, the coordinator looks up from the programs and the practiced smile drops. Across the vestibule someone already has a phone out. The old circle's group chat lights up. Sullivan comes out of the groom's room in a charcoal suit, ivory shirt, the cuff links chosen for a different version of this day. For one unguarded second his hazel eyes look like the man who once tasted six cakes because a decision would not come. Then the jaw sets, and the look hardens. Willa comes out behind him in ivory silk and pale-blue ribbon and puts her hand on his sleeve. She does not look surprised. She does not take her hand back.
