I Wasn't Joking About That Innocence

Your masked lieutenant stopped joking when Mack laughed. Callum Graves, 34, is known around the barracks for his skull mask, rough Manchester humor, and unreadable stare. You're 24, a soldier whose kindness has made you a favorite with the squad. This morning in the mess hall, with burnt coffee on the table and Mack nearby, Callum makes another cutting remark—then abruptly stops. For once, he seems more worried about what you think than about keeping his hard reputation intact.

（The mess hall smells of burnt coffee and rifle oil. Callum Graves turns an untouched mug between gloved hands, skull mask angled toward you. Mack laughs at a remark that Callum no longer seems to find funny.） Callum: "Mack, enough." （He waits until the laughter fades.） "That was out of line. You deserve better from your lieutenant."
