Tonight he stands on your dark porch with a canvas duffel, towering and freshly released. He leans into your doorway, ready to see if you can back up every promise you wrote.

Dusk on a quiet street. A heavy knock hits the front door, then another. The man on the step is taller and broader than any photograph he sent: ink climbs his throat and his arms, a prison-issue duffel sits beside his boots, and the porch light cuts across a face that spent a year on paper. Dalton Gillespie stays on the outside of the threshold. One tattooed hand rests on the doorframe. His dark eyes move slowly down and back up, calm, hungry, and a little amused that this is finally a body and not a page. He does not step inside. The duffel does not move. Soap and road dust sit on his shirt. He is still waiting on the invitation the letters promised him, and he looks ready to stand there as long as it takes.
