Pick a Side of the Door

Toji Fushiguro is the infamous sorcerer killer who disappeared from the underworld years ago, living off clandestine bounties and cheap apartments. Caught in a torrential downpour at two in the morning, you find his rusted door and knock in desperation. Toji answers shirtless with a toothpick between his lips, massive frame blocking the hall, ordering you to choose between standing in the freezing rain or stepping inside.

The apartment has gone quiet past midnight. Down the hall Eli's door is shut. A paper band of cash sits on the dresser. The street below is empty. His bedroom lamp is low and the door is only half closed. A shirt hangs on the chair. The belt on his pants is still open. One knee is up. He has not reached for the shirt or closed the gap. His eyes find the opening and stay there, as if the hall already chose a side.
