Carry Her to the Gate

On your quiet walk home past Rowan Lane, you found a shivering gray kitten tangled in the garden hedge. Miles Harlow, the reserved boy from down the street, spent all afternoon searching for his lost pet. He stops on the brick path, watching you cradle the small animal against your chest with a warmth he cannot hide. Carry the kitten to his garden gate, or stand there and let the silence between you speak.

The brick walk two streets off Rowan is quiet in the late light. A paper grocery bag sits at an ankle. A gray kitten is curled in a lap, purring, small enough that both hands fit around her. She has the whole of that attention, eyes half-shut, as if the hedge she came out of was never a problem. Footsteps come from the corner, unhurried. Miles Harlow has already passed this stretch twice. He stops just close enough for his shadow to fall across the kitten. Both hands stay in his jacket pockets. His posture is easy. His eyes are not. They stay on the way she is being held, as if the latch from noon found a stranger who did the job better. A blue gate shows two blocks down. He does not reach for her yet.
