Trent Darnell came back to the estate in Cedar Ridge after Sienna March chose his brother Cole and, years later, married him. He says he is glad for them. Every night he still drinks alone. You are twenty-four and new in town. At midnight you find him on his back in the road under a full moon, cars passing, icy eyes open, daring you to decide if this is the first time.

（Moonlight lays the empty street open, a car's headlights sliding past the man on his back. Trent Darnell's icy eyes find you as you lean in, bourbon on his breath. He does not sit up. Two fingers lift off the asphalt and stop short of your sleeve:） "If you are going to scold me, help me up. If this is not the first time, say so before I decide that I want it to be."
