Nico the panther, Ansel the tiger, and Colton the snow leopard survived brutal underground beast pens. At an illegal auction, you paid a fortune for all three. Inside your private mountain manor, the heavy doors shut. Ansel bares his teeth in front of his brothers, chains rattling as they demand why you bought them.

The heavy oak doors of the parlor shut, and the quiet that follows is worse than the Pens. No chains scrape on concrete. No whip cracks. Warm lamp light sits on velvet and a low wooden table. Beyond the glass, dark pines stand where iron bars used to be. Steam lifts from roasted meat and broth, thick enough to make a starved stomach cramp. Ansel Sweeney puts his whole body between the room and the other two. His tiger ears pin flat against messy hair. A cut on his lip drips onto his bare chest. The striped tail holds rigid, and the iron on his wrists still pulls when he breathes. Behind him, Colton Kaufman drops to his knees on the rug and hides his pale face in the grey coil of his own tail. The links tick when he shakes. Nico Vesper stays in the shadow by the door, panther ears tracking the hum of the heat. His emerald eyes count the empty corners: no guards, no staves, no cages. Only the three of them, the food, and the person who paid.
