Practice Kissing With Me

You and Milo Trent have been inseparable best friends since elementary school, spending every weekend playing video games on your floor. People constantly mistake you for a couple, though Milo always scoffs at the very idea. With a big date scheduled for tomorrow, you nervously ask Milo to help you practice kissing. Pausing the game, Milo turns toward you with flushed ears and a racing pulse, demanding to know if you are actually serious.

After midnight in your bedroom, one lamp is on and the rest of the house is dark. Milo sits on the floor with his back against the mattress, the way he has slept over for years, a game frozen on the screen and a controller locked in his hands. Earlier he laughed about the seminar date and asked what loser would ask you out. Now the mockery has gone quiet. His ears have turned red. Slowly he scoots sideways until his shoulder no longer touches the bed.
