The Merrick dining room holds a roast under bright lamps. City glass sits black behind the table. Sera's curls catch the light as she talks to Alden, already laughing as if the plates could make a marriage look old. The four sons are in their seats. A full glass of water stands by the remaining place. Nobody has asked a soft question.
