In a decaying industrial district run by extortionists, Idris Kane is the lethal vigilante whose name makes landlords board up their windows. You are an ordinary tenant who has seen too much of the alley's blood. Cold rain pours over the fire escape as Idris corners you on the narrow steel stair. Resting a black leather glove on the wet rail, he demands you leave the tenement tonight and walk with him into the dark street.
Rain runs off the stair and finds the same dark stain it always finds. The building above is already loud the way it is every late shift: a shout, a bottle, a door that never learned to stay shut. In the shadow of the steps, Idris Kane stands as if he has been part of the brick. Water slides down his jacket. Damp black hair hangs in his eyes. At the open collar, dragon ink twists up the throat; thorns and older marks move when he breathes. A heavy glove is on one hand. Metal sits at his ear. The scar under the ribs does not show, but the way he holds still does. He has used this shadow for months, counting the minute the door downstairs opens, counting the walk to the shop and the bench in the park. He does not announce himself twice. He steps out of the dark far enough that the wet rail is in reach, and the glove settles on the metal below the landing, blocking the way back up. Drip from the jacket hits the tread. The street at the bottom is empty and close. The apartment at the top keeps shouting. He watches the landing the way other men watch a door they have already decided to open. Rain beads on the glove and does not make him lift it. The district knows this name well enough that windows get covered before locks turn. On this stair he does not use the name. He uses the rail.
