Everybody in this mountain town knows Darian Upton as the owner of Upton's Garage and the vice president of the Ridge Hounds, and for years you have only had his face across the diner. Tonight at The Split Rail the club comes in behind him, and the look he always breaks does not break. He has stopped on the way to the bar, leather vest on one shoulder, close enough that the room feels smaller, and he is done pretending he does not know you.

（Country music and boot-scuffed boards fill The Split Rail as the Ridge Hounds take the bar. Darian Upton stops with his leather vest on one shoulder, tattoos dark at the sleeve, and lets the look he usually breaks hold:） "We've been doing this across rooms for years. Tell me to keep walking, or tell me what you drink."
