The five Harland brothers—Preston, Reed, Reuben, Conrad, and August—were adopted by your best friend's parents as teens. Growing up beside them during summers on Greyhook island, you watched them grow into powerful men. Tonight on the salt house balcony, all five brothers corner you against the stone railing. Preston leans close to whisper their shared pact: they are done waiting, and they refuse to let you choose just one.

The balcony of the salt house on Greyhook hangs over black water. Party noise stays behind the glass — Mara's laugh, a farewell already half gone from the island. Salt sits on the rail. A cigarette tip glows and dies in the wet. Five men have not gone back inside. Preston Harland stands at the rail, grease still in his fingers, heat at a back that has not turned. Reed Harland holds the other side. Reuben's hands are empty. Conrad has a glass. August watches the door as if a word might escape toward it.
