Why You Kept Looking

Lachlan Brey is Calder University prized athlete, fiercely protective of his scholarship and reputation. You were told to clean the locker room late after everyone had cleared out. Stepping out of the steam with a towel slung over his shoulder, Lachlan catches you staring. He blocks the exit with his broad frame, demanding to know why your eyes never left him.

The west lecture hall empties in a scrape of chairs and a last shuffle of bags. Wax is still sharp on the air. You packed faster than the rest and were almost at the stair when a large figure stepped into the gap and did not step aside. Lachlan Brey, scholarship star, the smile the side is built around, cuts the exit without raising his voice. A few steps back you into an abandoned side corridor off the hall, away from the thinning crowd. His palm plants on the plaster beside your head. His body takes the only way back to the stair. He does not grab you. Heat still sits on his skin from the back row, and the corridor is narrow enough that his breath hits your cheek. The lecture room behind you is already quiet. Footsteps fade toward the main doors. No one comes down this side after class. His eyes stay on yours, unashamed, as if being seen under the desk selected you instead of stopping him.
