The Porch Light Came On Alone

You and your friends drove up to Blackpine for a weekend at a secluded mountain cabin, including your ex Joel Sweeney and his new girlfriend Willa. Between the cold mountain wind and forced smiles, the tension was already heavy before the engine died. The car headlights cut through the dark, finding a single yellow bulb flickering above the leaning porch. Joel looks over at you, his sleeve brushing yours in the dark.

The car climbs the narrow road toward Blackpine, headlights finding the cabin only at the last second. The house is big and dark and leans a little, all sharp angles and shadowed windows, the kind of place a horror movie would pick. Hayden talks from the back seat about where people get killed. Willa laughs too loudly. Joel Sweeney parks on the gravel and kills the engine. Silence sits heavy. Snow ticks on the roof. The forest beyond the drive holds still: no wind, no birds. Everyone climbs out. Snow crunches under boots. Willa stays on his other side and tells him not to leave her. His sleeve brushes his ex's arm and does not move away. Then the porch light hums on, though nobody touched a switch.
