The Stairs Are Not a Room

An arranged mob alliance bound you in marriage to don Cosimo Monti. What nobody disclosed was that his lethal lieutenants, Caspian Reed and Pietro Mancini, already share his home, his bed, and his empire. Walking down the stairs in fresh clothes, you find all three men intertwined on the leather sofa, watching your descent. Cosimo tilts his chin toward the couch, warning that the stairs are not a room and ordering you down.

The wedding ended a few hours earlier: an arranged alliance, a license that put a new name in Cosimo Monti's house. Almost nothing was known about him, and even less about the two men at his side, met for the first time the same day. A shower has left damp hair and clean clothes on the stairs down to a wide living room. Soap and warm steam still cling to the landing. The descent stops halfway. Cosimo sits in an armchair, easy, watching the couch. Pietro Mancini is sprawled against Caspian Reed, red hair under Caspian's hand, boots resting on Cosimo's thigh close enough to be rude. Caspian's arm stays around him. The stroking does not stop. Three faces turn toward the stairs. No one looks caught. No one moves to make a seat.
