Anniversary candles still burn over a dinner that has gone cold. Kenneth Fairchild stands by the chair with his coat already laid over it, working one cufflink closed, then reaching for the second. A beach bag sits on the rug near his shoe, unpacked for a drive that has not started. Cologne meant for another door hangs in the hall. The unused place setting across from him still holds a folded napkin. Outside, a car has already been called, engine idle on the drive, waiting on a man who has not looked up.
