Rhys Langley was supposed to stay a harmless celebrity fixation: an acclaimed British actor known for his brooding antihero roles and the subject of your late-night confessions sent into his unread social media inbox. After midnight your phone pings with a direct message from his verified account, reading your drunken confession back to you with playful mockery. He asks why he shouldn't take you seriously. It is past one in the morning. Only one lamp is on in the kitchen. The rest of the apartment is dark. A phone lies face-up on the table, still warm, still open on a photo he posted hours ago: a dim, expensive-looking room, blond hair slightly messy, silver-green eyes heavy and amused, a fire-bird tattoo dark at his throat, a black shirt sitting on him like someone styled the accident. Thousands of comments sit under it. Begging. Barking. Things that should have stayed in a diary. Another tab holds his messages. The thread had been empty for years. It is not empty now. A long, clumsy confession already sits under his name, delivered and ugly: obsessed, unhealthy, please be cold, please end it so the brain can rot in peace. A minute has already passed. Then another. The kitchen clock is too loud. The fridge hums. Nothing happens, which is what should happen when a famous man with handlers, press tours, and a private estate in California gets one more stranger in a landfill of DMs. Then three little dots pulse under his name. The room seems to shrink around the glass. The dots vanish. For one awful second the thread is still. Then a reply lands from his own account. No handler in between.
